Stoneybrook Steeplechase, held every April. Carolina Horse Park is

Pinehurst
Harness Track - The Pinehurst Harness Track (circa
1915) was the winter home of polo ponies, hunters, running horses
and standardbreds. It was here that owners, trainers and resort
guest could all enjoy friendly competition during the Wednesday
Matinee Programs. These events continue today as these races are an
important spring social event. Freshmen trotters and pacers have
their first racing experiences before a crowd of over 3,000 people
who enjoy tailgate parties and a great afternoon under the Carolina

Airborne
and Special Operations Museum, 100 Bragg Boulevard
(corner of Bragg Blvd. & Hay St.), Fayetteville The Army's most
modern and newest museum, the $22.5 million facility features film
and video productions, interactive displays, rare artifacts and
dramatic life-size exhibits about the history and adventures of
airborne and special operations units. Open 10am - 5pm, Tuesday
through Saturday, and Noon - 5pm on Sunday. The museum is closed on
Mondays, but is open on all Federal holiday Mondays. Admission is

Bethesda Church & Cemetery,
N.C. 5 (Bethesda Road), Aberdeen. Circa-1790 church features Old
Slave Gallery, exterior bullet holes from Civil War battle, and
graves of area pioneer settlers. Listed in the National Register.

Bryant
House & McLendon Cabin, 3361 Mt. Carmel Road,
Carthage. Upper Moore County near Harris Crossroads. Two historic
museum houses depicting the daily life of early county settlers
during the 1700 and 1800's. The McLendon Cabin (circa 1760) is the
county's oldest standing structure in its original location. About a
15-20 min. drive from the Pinehurst traffic circle. Operated by the
Moore County Historical Association and the Friends of the Bryant

Campbell
House Galleries & The Arts Council of Moore County,
482 E. Connecticut Avenue, Southern Pines. The home of the Arts
Council of Moore County. The Campbell House Galleries provides three
spacious exhibit areas and offers paintings and pottery for sale by
local artists. In addition, tennis and basketball courts as well as
a fitness court are available for public play. Open from 9 am-5 pm,
Mon.-Fri. and each 3rd Sat. & Sun. of the month, 2-4 pm. Free.

Carthage Historical Museum,
Rockingham and Saunders St., Carthage. The Carthage Historical
Museum provides a permanent home for artifacts covering 200 years of
local history. Several exhibits reveal the town's past as the home
of a renowned buggy factory, which the town commemorates each May
with a popular family festival. The museum is open on Sundays, 2-5

House
in the Horseshoe , 324 Alston House Road, 10 Miles
North of Carthage. Built around 1772, this 18th century plantation
home features a gabled roof, large double shouldered Flemish bond
chimneys and a shed porch. Formerly a cotton plantation, the house
clearly shows bullet holes resulting from a 1781 skirmish between
Whigs and Tories. Admission is free, site inspections may be made
year-round, and group tours are welcome. Hours vary according to
season. Annual events include a Revolutionary War Battle Reenactment
the first weekend in August and a Christmas Open House &
Candlelighting celebration in early December. Please call ahead for

Kelly's Classic Autos, 360 N. Walnut St. (US Hwy 1),
Pinebluff. This auto museum features rotating displays with vehicles
from every decade of the 20th century. Includes Richard Petty's 1988

Malcolm Blue Farm,
Bethesda Road, Aberdeen. Built around 1825, this antebellum farm has
been recognized by the National Register of Historic Places for
authenticity and uniqueness. Structurally, it features the farmhouse
and barns, the old gristmill and a wooden water tower, and stands as
a significant preservation of rural history in Moore County. Annual
events at the Malcolm Blue Farm include the Historic Crafts and
Skills Festival the last weekend of September and the Early American
Christmas on the second weekend in December. Open Wed.-Sat. 1-4 pm.

County Historical Association - The mission of the
Moore County Historical Association is to promote awareness and
appreciation of the heritage of Moore County through its houses,
furnishings, books, documents, tours and services. The Shaw House

Railroad Museum & Hall of Fame, 2 Main St.,
Hamlet. Former Seaboard Air Line Railway depot (circa 1900) and
prime example of Victorian architecture; one of the most
photographed stations in eastern U.S. Exhibits include SAL
diesel-electric locomotive and caboose #5241, railroad memorabilia,
model railroad layout, re-created telegraph office and gift shop.

North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame, Weymouth Center,
555 E. Connecticut Ave., Southern Pines. Newly established shrine of
the most distinguished Tar Heel men and women of letter. Displays,
photographs and lists of works for such notable writers as Thomas
Wolfe, O. Henry (William S. Porter), Paul Green and James Boyd,

Carolina Pottery Center, 250 East Avenue, Seagrove.
Opened in 1998, the NC Pottery Center's permanent exhibits trace the
history and development of NC pottery from the prehistoric Native
Americans to the present. Changing exhibits throughout the year
focus on various topics of both historic traditions and contemporary

Asheboro. This 500-acre natural habitat zoo ranks among the top 5 in
North America. Plant/animal exhibits feature North America

Northern Moore County "Pottery
Country" & Jugtown/Seagrove - Includes Jugtown
Pottery, Ben Owen Pottery, Fireshadow Pottery and many other
independent potters. This area is famous for its hand-thrown pottery
and dishware, artfully crafted before the eyes of fascinated
spectators and offered for sale at reasonable prices. Typical
standout features include: salt-glaze stoneware, innovative designs
and wood firing in groundhog kilns. Most area potters are open
year-round. Seagrove is a small community in Randolph County, in the
center of Piedmont North Carolina, but the Seagrove pottery
community includes portions of Randolph, Moore, Montgomery and Lee
counties. It is here that a rich pottery tradition began more than
200 years ago.
Rankin Museum of American Heritage, 131 W. Church St.,
Ellerbe. Exhibits feature 19th-century pottery, antiques, medical
memorabilia, natural history, paleontology, Native American/Artic
artifacts, Civil War relics and original turpentine still. Rated
among N.C.'s top ten museums by the State Magazine. Open Mon.-Sat.

Sandhills Horticultural Gardens, Sandhills Community
College on Airport Road, Pinehurst. 32 acres featuring the Ebersole
Holly Collection, a specialized Conifer Garden, the Sir Walter
Raleigh Garden (a formal English Garden), and a native wetland
trail. Designed and maintained by the college's Landscape Gardening
Department and Sandhills Horticultural Society, the Sandhills
Horticultural Gardens are handicapped accessible and open daylight

Shaw
House Property, Morganton Road and SW Broad Street,
Southern Pines. A trio of historic museum houses depicting the daily
life of early county settlers. The Shaw House (circa 1820's) was
built by Charles C. Shaw and later owned by one of his twelve
children, Charles Washington Shaw, who became the first mayor of
Southern Pines in 1887. The house is typical of the antebellum homes
which followed the cabins of the early Sandhills settlers. It is
less elaborate than the seacoast plantations and has the charm of
sturdy simplicity which was characteristic of the Scottish families
who settled in this region. The Garner House and the Britt-Sanders
Cabin (also known as the Loom House) were both built in the 1700's.

Creek Indian Mound State Historic Site Town Creek
Mound Road (between N.C. 731 & N.C. 73), Mt. Gilead
.Archaeologically restored site brings to life the culture of the
Muskogean Indians of the Pee Dee area from more than 300 years ago.
Religious, ceremonial and burial center tells their story through
interpretive exhibits and an 18-minute slide presentation, as well
as reconstructed structures including a major temple on an earthen
mound, a minor temple, mortuary, game pole and stockade with two

pictures, and news clippings displayed here dating from 1895. Also

Weymouth
Center, 555 E. Connecticut Avenue, Southern Pines.
Former home of author and publisher James Boyd and home to the NC
Literary Hall of Fame, the Weymouth Center sits on 24 acres
surrounded by stately longleaf pines. Listed on the National
Register of Historic Places. The facilities are available for rent
for private functions. Office Hours are Mon. - Fri. 10am-2pm. Docent

Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve, 1024 Ft. Bragg
Road, Southern Pines. The facility has 898 acres of wildflowers,
forest animals, streams and ponds, four and one-half miles of hiking
trails with informative stations, a beaver pond, a newly renovated
museum with participation exhibits and a full-time naturalist. A
Sunday nature study program is offered each spring and summer. Open
